Tips to treat dry and damaged hair

How to improve dry and damaged hair
(29 May 2007)

Often, the natural oil (sebum) does not reach from the scalp to the tips of the hair causing the hair to become dry and brittle. There are a lot of factors that strip away the moisture and natural oils from your hair. Overexposure to the sun and pollution is one of the reasons; so it’s important to cover your head when you step out.

Another reason is excessive use of styling products like hair colors and dyes and heating equipments like irons and blow dryers. These should be used as seldom as possible. Apart from that, harsh chemicals in your shampoo and a lack of conditioning also add to the problem of dry and damaged hair. There are many people who avoid any consumption of fats, which affects the sebum production, thereby causing dryness of hair. If one makes sure that he or she avoids all these problems, their hair wouldn’t be damaged or have split ends.

There are many treatments that can get rid of dryness and bring the shine back to the hair. Unfortunately, hair damaged by split ends will have to be cut off. But if one takes good care, the hair will grow to be more than just fine. One of the most important things to do is drink lots of water to avoid dehydration of the hair. Also, include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and nuts and seeds in your diet to make up for the lost vitamins and essential fats. It’s also very essential to condition one’s hair after every wash and deep condition it once a week. Applying warm oil at least twice a week and a hot oil treatment once a week will also bring life back to the damaged hair. An effective remedy for damaged hair is applying a mix of one cup of skimmed milk with a beaten egg. Mix these two till you see consistent foam in the cup of milk. Massage into the scalp and hair and let it stay for 10 minutes and then wash your hair off with a mild herbal shampoo. Mash one ripe banana and an avocado, smear it on your scalp and hair and cover your head. Keep it on for about 30 minutes and then wash the hair off. Vinegar is also an effective natural conditioner. After shampooing your hair, pour a cup full of vinegar as a final rinse. It will also eliminate problems like dandruff also.
