(29 May 2007)

An excess of uric acid in the body can lead to gout or kidney stones. Both conditions are very painful and therefore more and more people are searching for home remedies or natural cures for controlling uric acid. One of the main home remedies for uric acid is to change one’s lifestyle and diet.

Ensure that you make a definite attempt to change your eating habits. Avoid foods that are high in uric acid, these include red meats, anchovies, mushrooms, organ meats and so on.

Foods that contain purine should also be avoided. This list includes fried, canned or processed foods and foods that contain caffeine (colas, chocolate, tea, coffee and so on). Include citrus fruits, apples, grapes and bananas and fresh and raw vegetables in your diet. One of the best and well known home remedies for uric acid is to drink plenty of water. Drink 6-8 glasses of water every day. This helps to flush out the excess uric acid from the body and will alleviate the painful symptoms of gout and kidney stones as well. Drinking black cherry juice is one uric acid natural remedy. Studies have shown that drinking just one glass of juice a day helps to lower the level of uric acid in the body.

What causes high uric acid?

Hyperuricemia is the medical term for having high levels of uric acid in the body. This condition is generally not a cause for concern but can give rise to problems like kidney failure, gout and kidney stones. Uric acid flows through the liver and into the blood where it is either passed to the intestine or excreted from the body in the urine. When the kidneys fail to do this, the uric acid forms deposits in your joints and this causes extreme pain.  There are many causes of high uric acid and these are listed below.
  • Consumption of foods that are high in purine – organ meats, red meats, dried beans and so on.
  • Hodgkin’s disease
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Leukemia
  • Genetics
  • Alcohol abuse – excessive intake of alcohol, especially beer and wine and increase uric acid levels.
  • Certain drugs – these include medications for high blood pressure. Chemotherapy for cancer has also been linked to high uric acid levels.
  • Dehydration and kidney function: When the kidneys do not function properly, the uric acid is not excreted and thus builds up in the body.
Now that we have looked at the causes of high uric acid, let us examine ways to lower uric acid naturally. One way is to change your diet and your lifestyle as well. Drinking plenty of water helps to flush out the uric acid in your body too.

How do I know if my uric acid level is high?

High levels of uric acid in the body occur either, when the body is unable to get rid of sufficient quantities of uric acid naturally or when the body produces too much uric acid. There are not many symptoms of high uric acid that you can look out for. However, this condition can lead to serious health problems such as kidney failure, kidney stones and gout. Keep in mind that the symptoms of high uric acid may only become apparent to you when you have an attack of gout. Gout is caused by the accumulation of high levels of uric acid in your joints, in the form of crystals. In this case, the symptoms of gout will be the symptoms of high uric acid.

The symptoms you might experience include redness, swelling, inflammation, stiffness, heat and excruciating pain. These symptoms can be felt in any of the joints (hands, wrists, feet and ankles) but more often than not in the big toe. Kidney stones can also form when the excess uric acid becomes small clusters of crystals. These can cause terrible pain when being stuck after being passed from the kidney into the ureter. Foods to prevent uric acid forming in the body include tomatoes, bananas, celery, fresh cherries, low fat dairy products, essential fatty acids and so on.

What foods are high in uric acid?

If you are suffering from gout, you will want to know which foods are high in uric acid so as to avoid such foods and keep to a healthy diet. Keep in mind though that the real question is which foods are high in purine. Purine is a natural chemical compound that exists in our bodies and in certain foods. The body metabolizes the purine to produce uric acid. The function of the kidneys is to process and expel this excess uric acid from the body through the process of urination.  Foods high in uric acids or rather foods that are high in purine are:-
  • Heart
  • Liver
  • Brain
  • Kidney
  • Shellfish
  • Goose
  • Partridge
  • Turkey
  • Red meat
  • Meat extracts
  • Gravy
  • Sweetbreads
  • Broth
  • Mushroom
  • Soya
  • Brewer’s yeast
  • Baker’s yeast and yeast extracts
  • Spleen
  • Fish roe
  • Lobster
  • Shrimp
  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Herrings
  • All alcohol – particularly beer
Besides these high uric acid foods, other foods like asparagus, spinach, lentils, legumes, dried peas, soy, oatmeal, cauliflower and mushrooms contain moderately high levels of purine.

There are also foods to lower uric acid levels. These include foods rich in complex protein like berries, tofu, bananas, tomatoes, cabbage and so on. Foods rich in vitamin C also help to reduce uric acid levels.
