Incontinence is not a disease but a symptom of some other underlying health problem. This involuntary urinating can be quite debilitating and embarrassing for the sufferer. In some people, the problem is so severe they involuntarily urinate even when they sneeze and cough.
The lack of bladder control can affect anyone at any age, though women are more prone to it. There four kinds of incontinences. Stress continence is caused by damage or weakness of the pelvis due to child birth, menopause, fracture of the pelvis or certain surgeries like a hysterectomy. The second type is urge incontinence, wherein the nerve connecting the bladder to the brain is damaged and the sufferer cannot make it to the toilet in time. The nerve is damaged by a stroke, multiplesclerosis, or damage to the spinal cord. When there is a mix of stress and urge incontinence, it causes mixed incontinence. The fourth kind is overflow incontinence caused by a tumor or an enlarged prostate. In this type, the urine production is more than the bladder is equipped to handle.
One of the triggers of the problem of incontinence is excessive weight. The extra pounds on the abdomen put pressure on the bladder, causing the problem of involuntary urinating. Nicotine and caffeine also irritate the bladder, so quitting smoking, coffee and tea is important for the sufferer of incontinence. There are juices of fruits like apple, cherry, grapes, and cranberry that are easy on the bladder and also effective in curing urinary tract infection. Juices of citrus fruits must be avoided as these irritate the bladder too. So, juices of grapefruit and tomato, and carbonated drinks should be as far away from the sufferer’s reach as possible. Alcohol should also be completely avoided by someone suffering from incontinence. It would be best for the sufferer to avoid spicy and tomato-based foods, as well as chocolates and sugary products.
To avoid embarrassing episodes of incontinence, the sufferer must always empty the bladder before stepping out. Also, after urinating, the sufferer can stand straight and bend down to add pressure to the bladder to eliminate any remaining urine as well. Maintaining a log of the frequency of your urination and also what products triggers it would help. Incontinence also leads to genital infections because of wetness caused by urine. To prevent that and also the odor, the sufferer can first wash the area with water and soap and then with diluted vinegar water.
