Sore throat
(30 Nov 2009)

Sore throat is one of the most common ailments experienced by almost everybody around the world. The frequency at which a person experiences this condition may vary. However, most people experience this condition at least twice a year, if not more.

Although, a sore throat is not usually considered to be a serious ailment, it can make a patient’s throat itchy and swollen. In certain cases, people experiencing this condition may find it difficult to swallow food and sometimes even fluids. Sore throat is also referred to as pharyngitis, within the medical circle. A viral infection such as common flu or influenza is the primary cause of this condition. A sore throat is the first sign that an individual is going to develop a fever or infection. Statistically speaking, sore throats are one of the main reasons for doctor visits per year. However, in most cases a sore throat can be treated at home effectively, with the use of simple home remedies. Please visit a doctor if your condition lasts for more than 3 days after implementing these remedies.
  • Keep your throat warm and moist by drinking plenty of warm water throughout the day. Warm water helps in soothing the sore throat, and also gets rid of any mucous that may have accumulated in your larynx. You may add a teaspoon of honey to warm water for better results, as honey will help in forming a protective anti bacterial coating over your inflamed throat.
  • Gargling with warm salt water is also essential in treating this condition. Salt contains iodine which is imperative for the smooth functioning of the thyroid glands. Salt also acts as an effective anti viral agent, and helps in clearing the throat.
  • You can also use cayenne pepper to cure a sore throat. Add half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper to 250 ml of water, and bring it to the boil. Stir this solution well and sip it slowly.
  • Honeysuckle tea is also very effective when it comes to treating a sore throat and other throat infections. However, make sure you use the flowers of this shrub, and not the leaves while preparing this tea.
  • Increasing your dietary intake of ginger and garlic will also prove beneficial in treating your sore throat. Ginger and garlic are very effective in eliminating viral and bacterial infections. You can chew on a garlic clove or a small piece of ginger   for effective relief. You may also include them in a clear vegetable soup, if you cannot consume them in their raw form.
