Temporary loss of voice occurs mostly due to excessive stress or infection of the larynx. The larynx contains the vocal cords, which are a pair of mucus coated flaps of muscle and cartilage that open and close under normal circumstances to allow air to pass through them and thereby create vibrations that are emitted as sound. However, if the vocal cords become inflamed, either due to overuse or excessive wear and tear caused by screaming or due to irritation and infections caused by allergens and pathogens then a person may suffer from an inability to talk normally or without pain.
The voice may sound hoarse, weak and almost inaudible. In children, laryngitis may cause a severe case of sore throat that may lead to complete loss of voice for a few days in some cases.
There are a few simple home remedies that you may follow to regain your normal voice. One of the best ways of dealing with this problem is to inhale steam from a large bowl of boiling hot water at regular intervals throughout the day. This helps moisten the respiratory tract and relieves the irritation in the throat. It is also useful to suck on lozenges or to chew gum in order to stimulate the production of saliva in the mouth, which keeps the vocal cords moist and soothes them. It is absolutely imperative that you stop smoking while the problem persists, as the fumes of smoke further irritate the vocal cords and may worsen the condition. It is also advisable not to venture out into dusty or smoky environments as this may also cause the irritation in the throat to increase. Using a humidifier in your room or office is also recommended to make breathing easier and less painful in this condition. You should drink 8-10 glasses of water and natural fruit juices at room temperature every day in order to soothe your vocal cords. Drinking a cup of warm ginger tea sweetened with a few drops of honey twice or thrice a day also helps kill the bacteria that may be responsible for causing infection in the larynx and restores normal voice in a couple of days. Also, restrict your intake of coffee and do not try to speak too much. You may also add a pinch of black pepper to a glass of lukewarm milk and drink this infusion once a day to get faster relief.
