Chest Cold Remedies

Common chest cold
(24 Nov 2009)

Congestion, and a runny or stuffy nose seems to be the eternal dilemma of the human race, with the common cold being the most common, widespread, and frequently occurring infection. A runny or stuffy nose is clearly indicative of a common cold. Although a common cold is a mild non threatening problem it still is extremely annoying.

A runny nose is extremely irritating and if not cared for can contribute to sinus problems, a cough, and ear aches.

There are several treatments available for colds with chest congestion that are extremely effective. Over the counter medications for colds are easily available and some of them are quite effective. It is however advisable to refrain from such pharmaceutical medications when dealing with a cold as they can sometimes create a resistance and most importantly they can cause negative reactions particularly when taken for a prolonged period or frequently. Given that common colds are the most frequent occurrence conventional medications are more often than not a viable option. Natural remedies are however extremely effective, and are even recommended by many health care providers.

Here are some popular home remedies that could offer some relief from the runny nose:
  • Salt water is the most commonly used methods to clear the nasal passages. Cleansing the nostrils with salt water will be unpleasant and uncomfortable at first but will bring great relief. Use a tablespoon of salt for eight ounces of water.
  • Spicy foods may seem like a strange remedy as they normal give you a runny nose when you don’t have one.  They can help however as blockage and toxins are itself causing your nose to be runny, and consuming these foods will cause them to get flushed out.
  • Mustard oil has also been used traditionally and is extremely effective. Heat some oil until it is just a little warm and release a drop or two into each nostril. Do this with only one nostril at a time however as the strong scent may make breathing difficult.
  • Turmeric is another cooking ingredient that has been widely used in the Indian subcontinent not just in food but also in natural medicine.
  • Steam inhalation is another method that is extremely effective and can provide quick relief from the symptoms. You can add in aromatherapy oils like eucalyptus oil.
