Piles is a common condition that can affect anyone. However, people above the age of 50 are generally prone to this condition. Piles, also known as hemorrhoids is a very painful and irritating condition, as it can make a patient immobile for a short period of time.

Piles occur when the veins present around the lower rectum get swollen and inflamed. Excessive pressure exerted on the tissue present in the lower rectum is the primary cause of piles. This excessive pressure can be exerted due to constipation, straining while passing stools, diarrhea, sitting in a constant position for long hours, and by undertaking heavy and strenuous exercise routines. Treatment of piles would involve simple dietary and lifestyle changes that aim at eliminating the root cause of the condition.
  • If you are experiencing piles because you sit down in a constant position for a long period of time, you must break this habit. You could do this by taking a short 2 minute break after every hour of work completed by you. This will reduce the amount of pressure being applied on your lower rectum tissue.
  • If you are an athlete, or are required to undertake strenuous work you should always wear a sports underwear, also commonly known as a jock strap. This will help in supporting the tissues present at the lower rectum region.
  • If you are experiencing piles due to constipation, you must consume a diet rich in fiber content. Fiber is the main component that helps the body transport waste from the digestive tract to the rectum. In the absence of fiber this process of eliminating waste from the body becomes slower, thus leading to constipation. Chronic constipation progresses to cause piles. Therefore, one must consume plenty of fruits like bananas, pears, apples, water melons and grapes when faced with this condition. Vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, beet and carrot are also rich sources of dietary fiber. Whole meal grains, pulses, oats and legumes are also rich sources of fiber. You should also avoid consuming red meats, and other fried and oily foodstuffs, as these cannot be digested easily by the body.
  • A person experiencing piles should drink plenty of water and fruit juices, as this helps in keeping the body hydrated.
  • In case you are experiencing bleeding, you can drink a formula made by mixing 140 ml of goat’s milk with 8grms of finely crushed mustard seeds. Add two teaspoons of sugar to this formula, and drink this tonic every morning as soon as you wake up.
  • Radish juice mixed with honey can be topically applied on the affected region in order to get rid of the itchy and burning sensation.
