Every person has an ideal weight that is dependent upon their height, age and sex and this is indicative of the person’s good health. However, very often, people may be underweight, or in other words, weigh less than what their ideal weight should be. When a person weighs ten percent less than his/her ideal weight, then he/she is termed moderately underweight.

Persons who weigh 20 percent less than their ideal weight are termed as being underweight. Being less than your ideal weight could result from a number of factors and it is important to determine these underlying causes before pursuing any specific kind of treatment. Consult your doctor to ensure that your low weight is not the result of any underlying medical disorder. For instance, several serious disorders like cancer, hyperthyroidism, tuberculosis, inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, metabolic disorders and even HIV/AIDS could cause a person to be underweight. In addition, the use of certain kinds of drugs, genetic factors and an insufficient intake of calories can also result in weight loss. Once you have identified the underlying cause for your condition, pursuing a treatment option will be easier. In addition to any course of treatment, you can help increase your weight and start looking healthy with the help of a few dietary changes and lifestyle tips. It is important to address the problem of being underweight immediately because it can put you at risk of contracting several diseases. This is because being underweight reduces your resistance to infection, leads to poor physical stamina and can even interfere with a normal menstrual cycle.

Some of the major factors that could be responsible for a person being underweight are poor eating habits and inadequate nutritional intake and you can help remedy this by making a few dietary changes. Firstly, ensure that you eat at regular intervals to avoid experiencing digestive disorders that may lead to weight loss. Avoid skipping meals as this would result in problems like acidity and heartburn as also lead to a gradual decrease in appetite. In addition, you should make some dietary changes to incorporate foods that will increase your calorific intake while simultaneously boosting your nutritional intake. One of the most effective ways to gain weight is to increase your consumption of banana. Bananas eaten thrice a day along with milk (in the form of banana shake) or curd will help increase your weight effectively.
