The first thing you need to do about your problem of being underweight is to find out the reason. It can be a thyroid problem, a lack of nutrition or caloric intake or excessive physical activity. Do you have a smaller or diminished appetite?

A lot of the times, stress and tension also kill appetite. If you have erratic eating habits or if you eat just a few small meals, you may need to work on that. Thinness is also heredity; if someone in your family is considerably underweight, you may have inherited this tendency from them. Being underweight is also caused by chronic diarrhea, intestinal worms, constipation, insomnia, and liver disorders. It would be best if you got these ailments ruled out, as these may do more harm to your health than just making you underweight. Being thin does not just make you look less pleasant than a healthy person; it also exposes you to the risks of diseases like tuberculosis, pneumonia, respiratory disorders, cancer, and heart disease among others.

There are many ways in which you can gain weight. But these do not include dietary changes alone. You need to make other lifestyle changes like following proper sleeping habits, avoiding excessive work and always being stress and tension free. You can also start consuming some food products that will also benefit your health in general. Include more dairy products like cheese in your diet. Chicken soup would also be a good idea, as it gives you plenty of much needed nourishment. Consume about 30 grams of raisins daily to gain weight in a short time. There are many fruits that are high in sugar content and one of them is mango. Take two ripe and sweet mangos followed by a glass of milk in the morning, afternoon and evening. Though mangos are high in sugar, they lack proteins. The glass of milk will provide you the required protein. Milk is very helpful in making one gain weight. It can be had in combination with many food products. Mix a teaspoon of honey in a glass of milk and consume it everyday. Banana milkshake is also known to increase weight very easily. Alternatively, eat a banana and have a cup of curd or a glass of milk. Follow this regime thrice a day to gain weight. You should also include healthy fats like olive oil in your diet and include avocados in your daily diet as avocados have a high fat content. Dry figs are also very beneficial in putting on weight. Soak about four dry figs in water overnight and consume the next day. This treatment also cures constipation, which is also responsible for thinness.

According to your height your ideal body weight should range form 70-75kgs. That means you need to gain at least 18-20 kilos more to be the least acceptable weight.

Follow these guidelines for gaining weight –

  • Gradually increase your whole day’s caloric intake. Have small meals at frequent intervals (have at least 6 meals in a day).
  • Consume energy dense foods such as mango milkshake, banana milkshake, nuts (soaked almonds, groundnuts, walnuts, cashew nuts or any others according to your choice).
  • Consume dry fruits like figs, dates and raisins 4-5 number in a day.
  • Avoid consuming water before meals.
  • Exercise to increase the muscle mass and also to increase your appetite.
  • If you have any emotional disorder like anorexia nervosa try to recognize it and treat it first.
