Hyperthyroidism Goiter

Is goiter dangerous
(21 Jun 2010)

Goiter is a physical condition wherein a swelling in the thyroid gland occurs which could lead to a possible swelling of the neck or the larynx, otherwise known as the voice box. This condition normally occurs when there is a problem in the functioning of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is controlled by the pituitary gland that is located in the brain.

The most common symptom of goiter is the enlargement or swelling up of the thyroid gland and the other symptoms include getting emotionally upset, losing concentration or even mood swings which happens due to the lack of iodine. If someone’s system lacks the free flow of iodine, the thyroid reacts to chemicals sent by the pituitary gland that results in the enlargement of the throat. If this is not taken care of at the right time it could prove fatal as the swelling can press against the trachea (windpipe) and cause problems or difficulties with swallowing or even breathing.

Treatments always vary depending on the seriousness of the issue like the size and cause of swelling of the goiter. Since goiter is caused from the absence or lack of iodine, a diet consisting of a good amount of iodine is very important and foods rich with iodine include fruits like pineapple, strawberries or any citrus fruits. Other foods include sea food, whole rice, tomatoes, egg yolk, onions, garlic carrots and lettuce. Maintaining a diet with these food items is a very good remedy that can be used and watched at home itself. Another good home remedy is making a paste of watercress which in itself is one of the best sources of iodine. It not only helps in reducing or preventing goiter, it can also cure it at times. Apart from these remedies, one needs to keep the following things in mind. Avoid beverages like coffee, alcohol or soda; as they contain a high amount of sugar. Foods with excess sugar and salt should be avoided. As soon as goiter is detected, one must take care of the food intake and must also make sure that the timings of meals are regular and healthy. Instead of taking three heavy meals a day, one can break it down to four or five moderately smaller meals a day. This would help in digesting the food properly and hence increase the process of distribution of nutrients to the different parts of the body.
