Tendinitis Treatment

Tenditious
(16 Nov 2009)

Tendinitis is also informally referred to as tendonitis. Tendinitis literally means inflammation of the tendons, as the suffix ‘itis’ means inflammation. Tendons are thick fibrous chords that attach the muscles to the bones.

A person experiencing tendinitis will notice a swelling around the inflamed tendons. This is a very painful condition, as the joints of the body get inflamed due to strain or excessive pressure exerted on them. Although tendinitis can affect any of the tendons present in the body, it most commonly affects the tendons of the elbows, wrists, heels and shoulders. This is because these are the joints that are used excessively by most individuals.

Tendinitis can be categorized into various types, depending on the affected area. The most common of these are: tennis elbow, pitcher’s shoulder, golfer’s elbow, jumper’s knee and swimmer’s shoulder. Severe cases of tendinitis can lead to the rupturing of a tendon, which will require surgical intervention. Fortunately, most cases of tendinitis can be treated without the need for surgical procedures, with the help of simple and effective home remedies.
  • Although tendinitis can occur due to sudden injury, it most often develops over a long period of time, due to repeated performance of a particular action. For example, a golfer needs to swing his golf club over and over again. This action when repeated for a long time places increased amounts of pressure on his or her elbow, thus causing tendinitis. The first remedy when it comes to treating tendinitis is complete bed rest. Avoid moving the particular joint that is inflamed for at least two days. This gives the affected tendon rest, and provides the body ample time to heal itself.
  • Apply cold compresses on your inflamed tendon. This will help in soothing the inflamed tendon, and give you effective relief from the pain. Ice helps by numbing the sore tendons, thereby reducing pain and speeding up a patient’s recovery process.
  • If you are experiencing jumper’s knee or tendinitis in your feet, keep your legs elevated above the level of your heart. This will help in reducing the swelling caused by this condition.
  • If you are experiencing unbearable pain, you may consume a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, also known as NSAID. This will provide you with effective relief from the pain. NSAID’s are available at all leading pharmacies. However, make sure you visit an orthopedic specialist as soon as possible in order to ascertain the amount of damage caused to your tendons.
