Irritable Bowel Relief

Relieve irritable bowel
(16 Nov 2009)

Irritable bowel syndrome, also referred to as IBS, is a very common health condition that affects the functioning of the colon. Like most stomach ailments irritable bowel syndrome is very painful, and causes a patient to experience bloating gas, abdominal pain, cramping sensations, constipation, and diarrhea. Fortunately, irritable bowel syndrome does not cause permanent damage to your large intestines or colon.

However, it does inflame a patient’s stomach lining and irritates his or her bowel tissues. This condition can be treated in most cases by simply implementing certain dietary and lifestyle changes.

The exact cause of irritable bowel syndrome has not yet been determined. However, this condition occurs when the muscles lining the stomach walls contract at a faster or slower pace. In short, this condition occurs due to the abnormal functioning of the stomach muscle contraction that helps in transporting waste from the colon to the rectum. In case the muscle contractions are fast, and last for longer periods of time, a patient experiences diarrhea. On the other hand, if the contractions are slower a patient experiences constipation. Certain foods like spicy food, foods containing artificial flavors and sweeteners, and dairy products are some of the common triggers of this condition. Apart from this, stress, hormonal imbalances and other illnesses like gastroenteritis may also trigger an episode of irritable bowel syndrome. You may use the remedies given below in order to get rid of this condition. However, please visit your doctor if your condition does not improve within two days.
  • Avoid consuming fried, oily, acidic, and spicy foods, while experiencing this condition. All these foods will only aggravate your condition, as they are difficult to digest and will irritate the stomach lining. You should also avoid fried potato chips, red meats, mustard sauce, and the likes.
  • Do not overstuff your self while eating, as this faulty eating habit puts an additional amount of pressure on your already weak digestive system. Eat smaller meals that are spaced out, rather that the conventional 3 meals per day. Including fiber in your dietary intake will prove very beneficial in treating this condition, as fiber provides the digestive tract with the roughage needed in order to transport waste from the intestines to the rectum. Vegetables like carrots, cucumber, beet, cabbage and broccoli are very rich in fiber content. Fruits such as apples, bananas, pears, water melons, and guava are also rich in fiber content. Avoid consuming lemons, oranges or other fruits that are acidic in nature as they may worsen your condition.
  • Drink plenty of water and fruit juices in order to relieve your condition.
  • Apply warm compresses on your stomach in order to experience effective relief form cramps and abdominal pains.
