Ulcerative colitis is a condition that is characterized by the chronic inflammation of the large intestine and is accompanied by a number of symptoms such as intense abdominal pain, rectal bleeding and diarrhea. The condition is very similar to another condition that is also characterized by the inflammation of the intestines and is known as Crohn’s disease. Recent studies have shown that a combination of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitits account for almost 2 million individuals in the United States of America alone.

The condition appears to affect men and women in equal proportion while also having the tendency to develop during early childhood or adolescence in most cases. The primary causes of the condition have still not been properly identified, but the condition is not contagious and does not pass on from one person to another through simple physical contact. While research is still ongoing, it appears that it is caused some kind of abnormal activation of the immune system in the intestines. Some of the other symptoms that a patient is likely to experience when affected by Ulcerative Colitis include a loss of appetite, weight loss, joint pain as well as the development of skin lesions. The accurate diagnosis of the condition lies in undergoing a combination of a number of medical tests such as a blood and stool test as well as extensive analysis of a patient’s medical history.

When dealing Ulcerative Colitis, it is important to give a lot of attention to the kind of foods that you eat. The most effective diet plan would be to consume nothing but fresh fruit juices for a period of about 5 days. These juices can be diluted with boiled and filtered water if you would prefer it that way. Make it a point to cleanse your colon on a daily basis with the help of an enema during this period of fruit juice dieting. After these 5 days have elapsed, for the next 10 days the patient should consume nothing but cooked or steamed vegetables, rice or even coarsely broken wheat along with homemade cottage cheese and papaya. Tender coconut is considered to be one of the most effective treatment options when it comes to dealing with ulcerative colitis. The fact that apple is heavily laden with iron and phosphorous make them very beneficial when dealing with this condition. Certain types of foods to consciously avoid when affected by this condition include beverages that tend to irritate the intestines such as coffee, alcohol and tea while also any kind of food that has been prepared on aluminum pans.
