My cholesterol level is to high what can I do
( 9 Apr 2010)

Cholesterol is an important steroid found in the human body. It also exists in all animals. It is absolutely necessary in cells and is used to form the membranes that allow nutrients and water to permeate.

Cholesterol also helps as a tool for the body to create bile, steroids and hormones.  While cholesterol is essential for a human being, excess cholesterol can be bad for health. Studies have shown that high levels of cholesterol cause heart problems that may lead to strokes or heart attacks. A high level of cholesterol is therefore an emergency warning for you to take note of and make the necessary adjustments to your lifestyle and diet.

High levels of cholesterol are linked with a poor and unhealthy diet. A diet that is heavy in meat, cheese, and dairy products contain high levels of cholesterol that are damaging to your health. The foods that are highest in cholesterol content include Beef, Beef liver, Chicken, Fried Eggs, French fries, Donuts and so on. A modern diet tends to be extremely bad for health. A lot of meals are eaten in a hurry and care is not taken to check the ingredients of the food. People tend to opt for fast food options over healthier home cooked or prepared food and this is what leads to weight gain and cholesterol problems. It is important to note that you could have a high level of cholesterol without being obese or even overweight. Your body may break down the fat well but the cholesterol content of the food you are eating remains in the body. Saturated fats in food can cause the liver to create a dangerous type of cholesterol. It also causes high levels of substances known as triglycerides.

Healthy eating will reduce your level of cholesterol. This includes simple things like changing your cooking oil to a type of oil that contains unsaturated fats. Sunflower oil is an example of oil with unsaturated fat content. You should substitute the heavy meat or fried item in your diet with a vegetable based diet or with fruits. Vegetables and fruits nourish the body with many different vitamins and minerals and also help by providing dietary fiber which improves the efficiency of digestion.  Green leafy vegetables are highly recommended.

It is also essential to make certain lifestyle adjustments. Exercising regularly over an extended period of may be hour or more will help your body to burn excess fat. It does not directly reduce cholesterol levels but it improves the overall health of the individual which will have a beneficial effect on cholesterol levels.
