Foot Pain Relief

My son is having problems with his left foot. It mostly hurt when he runs on the left side about the middle. We went in for x-rays which showed nothing broken. We ice it down and avoid running for a couple of weeks.

Foot pain may be a result of various factors. Disease or trauma to the foot most often leads to pain and discomfort in the feet. Trauma could be due to any external force that directly impacts the body or forces an area of the body to take an abnormal position.

This could lead to damage to the certain body structures within the area. Injuries such as sprains of the muscles or ligaments and fractures are some of the common causes of foot pain. Sprains may occur when the ligaments in the area stretch too widely and develop tears in their fibers. Foot pain could also depend upon how loose or tight the ligaments are. The muscles can become stretched even due to overuse, bruising or cuts. A common cause of foot pain is Achilles tendonitis which affects the tendon beneath the heel.

Injury to the joints of the feet can either be due to a single impact or due to repeated trauma which can ultimately lead to a fracture. If someone steps on your foot, in addition to bruising, damage to the ligaments and muscles may also develop. When the joints of the foot become irritated, the condition is referred to as metarsalgia. Turf toe is a frequently occurring athletic injury in which the tendon beneath the big toes becomes strained. Injury to the toe nail could also lead to clotting of blood and pain. Another factor that contributes to foot pain is improper footwear. Shoes that don’t fit well can cause bruising, swelling and blisters. In the long run, corns, misalignment of the toes and irritation in the joints and nerves can also occur. Certain medical conditions are also known to lead to foot pain. These include diabetes, gout and hansen’s disease.

Foot pain can be relived through the use of warm water treatment. Soaking the feet in a bath of warm water for about fifteen minutes is known to alleviate foot pain caused from fatigue. The warm water helps to soothe the tired muscles. Alternating hot treatment with cold treatment also works well in treating foot pain. Apply a hot compress such as a heating pad and then alternate with an ice pack. You can also add some mustard seeds to a foot tub and have your son soak his feet in the solution for fifteen minutes. Mustard seeds are known to promote better blood circulation and helps in relaxing the joints and muscles.
