Humans and other animals have teeth for the purpose of eating food. Teeth serve as agents to tear food apart as well as to mix it well with saliva, to encourage movement down the digestive canal as well as digestion itself. Teeth are made of a hard outer layer that is made of calcium.
The actual white part of the tooth is the calcium part. The rest of the tooth includes the layers below and the gums. The gums are where the nerves actually end. The outer most layer of the tooth is the enamel coating that makes it hard and protects the tooth from infection. Below this is the dentin layer, which acts to support the top of the tooth as well as to prevent infections from reaching the gum level. The dentin layer is the most susceptible to cavities being formed.
Toothaches can be caused by a number of different factors. Primarily, people who suffer cavities in their teeth are susceptible to toothaches. Cavities occur when there is improper oral hygiene. The food or sugar left in the mouth becomes acidic and eats away at the upper layers of the tooth, which is the enamel and dentin. When the root and pulp area of the tooth begin to get exposed, you will start to suffer from toothaches. At this point, chewing hard items, drinking or eating cold things and excessively hot food or drink are all likely to cause extreme discomfort in your teeth. This is because the tooth root is now exposed and the pain comes as a reaction to this exposed area being affected by what we are consuming. Toothaches are also likely to be caused by gum related problems or problems in the root. If the gum is infected you will begin to feel pain that can be confused with a toothache. If the root of your tooth is infected you will experience a sharp pain. This condition may require you to undergo a root canal surgery to relieve the pain.
Washing your mouth with warm water may help relieve the symptoms. It may also encourage any food that is jammed in your teeth to be released and this will offer considerable relief to you. If the ache is caused by hot or cold food or drink, try to avoid these for a few days for your tooth to heal. In case of a cavity, a visit to a doctor may be necessary to solve your pain.
