Cure for Jaundice

Is Jaundice Contagious?
( 5 Apr 2010)

Jaundice by itself is not contagious. It is an ailment that develops due to the presence and imbalance of other conditions. Our blood contains a substance known as bilirubin.

It is yellowish-orange in color and is generated when the red blood cells break down. It is the liver that converts this substance into bile and throws it out of the body through the stool. However, if the liver is not working properly, bilirubin will not be processed, and will therefore not be thrown of the body. When it is not thrown out of the body, it keeps building up in the blood and starts depositing itself on the outer layer of the body. This is what gives the yellow tint to the skin of a person suffering from jaundice. Usually, it is a dysfunctional liver that leads to jaundice but there are time when certain problems with the blood and the spleen can also lead to this ailment. It is, therefore, necessary that you consult a physician as soon as you notice your skin turning yellow or else if you start experiencing any of the other symptoms of jaundice such as nausea, vomiting, darkish-yellow urine, stools that are grey in color, fever, sudden weight loss, and constant pain in and around the abdominal area, to ascertain the actual cause of the problem.

Along with consulting the physician, there are a few things that you can do at home to get rid of jaundice. Take the green leaves of radish and crush them to extract their juice. Drink one glass of this juice everyday to help improve the bowel movements, which in turn will help to get rid of this problem. Another set of leaves that work equally well are snake gourd leaves. Take a handful of these leaves and a handful or coriander seeds and add them both to 3-4 glasses of water. Boil this water till it reduces to just one glass and drink this concoction when it cools down. Another juice that works wonders is tomato juice. In one glass of tomato juice, add a little bit of salt and pepper and have it first thing in the morning. One very tasty remedy is a mixture of almonds, cardamoms, butter, sugar, and dried dates. Soak the dates, cardamoms, and almonds overnight in water, and make a paste of it in the morning by adding sugar and butter to it. Intake of lemon juice is a must to help cure jaundice.
