Being pregnant is one of the most beautiful experiences a woman can go through and the whole process of giving birth to another human being can be quite awe inducing. However, this is also a very stressful time for the expecting mother with all the major changes that are taking place within her body. The varying hormonal levels during the more intense phases of the pregnancy will also see the mother become more unpredictable in her reactions and habits.
Pregnancy demands a substantial number of changes to anybody's lifestyle. The more well known changes in lifestyle are that the expecting mother will need to stop smoking and drinking in order to avoid exposure of the unborn baby to the harmful chemicals in these substances. While this is very hard to do under normal circumstances, being pregnant makes it very easy to stop indulging in these habits. The taste buds will suddenly change in the way they sense tastes and the alcohol that used to be very pleasing will now have a very repulsive taste. It is also very important to be aware of the problems that alcohol can cause to the child. FAS, or Fetal Alcohol System, is a condition that affects babies whose mothers have consumed a certain amount of alcohol during the pregnancy. The problems it causes include disorders of the central nervous system, behavioral problems, growth problems as well as learning disabilities and developmental delay. While the condition is known to become more serious with the increase in alcohol content consumed, it is still unknown how much alcohol will be safe during a pregnancy. Smoking is another very common habit that needs to be avoided during a pregnancy as it can lead to a number of pregnancy related complications such as miscarriage, weight loss and bleeding during pregnancy. Premature delivery is another very serious complication that arises out of smoking during the pregnancy.
Caffeine intake should also be avoided as much as possible as too much of the substance is known to increase the risk of a spontaneous abortion. Limiting the caffeine intake is not only limited to coffee, but also to cocoa products, hot chocolate and certain types of medication. During a pregnancy, it is important to be able to allow your body the right amount of exercise as well as rest. The exercise bit will help you deal better with the stresses and tensions of a pregnancy while also helping you stay fit for the actual delivery.
