Gout is a very debilitating condition that has a number of similarities to arthritis. The primary difference between the two is that gout features the accumulation of uric acid crystals within the joints and will most commonly affects knees, elbows, hand wrist and big toe. The condition is caused primarily as a result of the breakdown of substances in the body to create purines - which are the waste products in the body.
Under normal circumstances, the uric acid will dissolve in the blood and pass through the kidneys and out of the body. However, for people that suffer from gout, the uric acid content in the blood is so high that it causes the formation of crystals that accumulate in joints all over the body. These crystals can cause substantial damage and some of the more common symptoms of the condition include pain, tenderness, redness and warmth. Gout is best treated when it is just starting. As the condition develops, the small crystals that have accumulated in the joints all over the body will build up and form a significantly large deposit known as Tophi. This will appear to be a rather large lump under the skin near the severely affected joints.
The more severe forms of gout can be significantly debilitating and affects not only movement of the individual, but the pain can also prevent the patient from concentrating on anything else. Apart from the inflammation of the affected joints, the patient may also develop a fever as well as a loss of appetite and sleep when affected by gout. If left untreated, the condition could also influence other medical ailments such as the failure of the kidneys.
A number of lifestyle changes and home remedies have been developed and perfected over the years in order to provide as much comfort as possible to an affected individual. French beans are known to be one of the most effective foods when dealing with gout and extracting about half a cup of their juice and drinking the concoction once or twice a day will have surprisingly beneficial results. It is important that the patient drink as much fluid as possible over the course of the day as this will not only help with the gout, but also prevent the development of kidney stones. Another option you can try is to dip a white smooth cloth in some warm castor oil and place it over the affected area before you cover it with some plastic and apply heating pads over it. This treatment is known to substantially reduce the amount of discomfort experienced.
