Suffering from bad breath can be one of the most socially embarrassing conditions to suffer from. The fact that people will make a very conscious effort to keep their distance even while having a very intimate conversation with you can be a clear indicator that something needs to be done. Medically termed 'Halitosis', the condition will affect almost every individual to some degree at some point of time in his or her life. However, when the condition is long lasting and very prominent, it is best that you have a medical care professional or dentist take a closer look. In order to be able to properly treat the condition, it is essential to understand and identify the causing factors. Normally, bad breath is results from the breakdown of proteins by bacteria that are naturally present in the mouth. These bacteria will usually be present around the tongue and thrive on any food particles that cling onto the cervices of the mouth just after a meal. This is one of the main reasons that good oral hygiene requires you to brush your teeth at least twice a day. This dislodges the food particles - preventing the bacteria from acting on them. Some other causing factors of bad breath include infections present in the mouth, an illness or even consumption of certain foods like garlic and onion. The primary difference between bad breath and halitosis is that the latter is a chronic condition while the former may only be a one off instance.
Because bad breath and halitosis are such a common condition, there are a number of simple home remedies that can help eliminate the problem. The consumption of black and green teas, for example, contain a compound known as Polyphenols - which halt the growth of bacteria as well as prevent the existing bacteria from producing compounds such as hydrogen sulfide. An increased consumption of crunchy fruits and vegetables such as carrots, celery and apples are known to help remove bacteria and plaque from the surface of the teeth. It is also important that you avoid using a mouthwash that has any alcohol presence as they tend to dry out the mouth excessively, creating the perfect environment for the bacteria to multiply more effectively. Adding some tea tree oil to your toothpaste is known to be a very effective treatment option when dealing with bad breath. Gargling with the substance is also known to be rather beneficial.
