A sore throat is one of the most common infections an individual will face on a regular basis. A hoarse voice and even temporary voice loss are some of the trademark characteristics of this condition. This is generally accompanied by a dry scratchy feeling and pain while swallowing.
A sore throat is also referred to as pharyngitis, and is caused by viral infections like influenza or the common cold. Although, sore throat is not considered to be a medical emergency, it is an indication that a person is about to fall ill. Therefore, one needs to take extra care of their health while experiencing this condition. Apart from being a symptom of illness, sore throat is quite an irritating condition, as it makes normal activities like eating, talking, and sleeping a painful process. Fortunately, there are many home remedies that will help you get rid of a sore throat.
- Gargling with warm salt water is considered to be one of the most effective remedies when it comes to treating a sore throat. Salt contains iodine that is helpful in maintaining the health of the thyroid glands. Salt also contains effective anti microbial properties and helps in getting rid of an infection effectively. Warm water helps in keeping the throat moist and warm.
- Ginger and garlic are also known to be effective in treating throat infections. Ginger and garlic possess anti bacterial and anti microbial properties that help in getting rid of throat infections. You must increase your dietary intake of ginger and garlic in order to soothe your throat. You can achieve this by either including them in clear vegetable soups and broths or by using them in a tonic. For a home made ginger-garlic tonic, take two pods of crushed garlic and mix it with a teaspoon of ginger juice. Add a teaspoon of honey to this mixture and consume this twice everyday.
- For another home made solution, mix two pinches of turmeric powder in a teaspoon of honey and consume it. Turmeric possesses effective anti bacterial properties that will help in eliminating the infection, while honey will help in soothing your inflamed throat.
- Avoid consuming oily or spicy food until your condition improves, as these will only irritate your already inflamed throat. Avoid consuming alcohol or smoking during your recovery period, as drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes will only worsen your condition by drying out your throat.
- Consume plenty of fruits, as these will provide your body with essential vitamins and minerals, and strengthen your immune system.
