Chest Congestion Remedies

Cure for cough blockage
(17 Nov 2009)

Congestion is a very common symptom of respiratory infections. When the body is under attack from harmful bacteria or viruses, it starts to send white blood cells to the infected areas to fight off the infection. This is why you will notice that your phlegm will become a whitish yellow color during this time.

Your immune system keeps fighting off the infection and the increase in mucus secretions often causes a runny nose. This allows the bacteria and the dead white blood cells to be expelled from the body. However, sometimes, the mucus secretions start to thicken within the respiratory system itself. This should not be ignored as the mucus also contains the bacteria and if it is left untreated, the bacteria can multiply and aggravate your cough. There are several home remedies that you can use to get rid of your congestion.

One of the simplest and most effective ways to get rid of congestion is steam inhalation. You will have to heat a large saucepan of water on high heat until it boils and then reduce the temperature. Wait until the water starts to simmer one more and then take it off the stove. Place the saucepan on a low table or a steady surface. Sit down in such a manner that your face is directly over the rising steam. Place a towel around your head so that the steam remains trapped. Inhale deeply so that the steam goes deep into your lungs. This will cause the mucus that is hardened to liquefy. You can also try to breathe through your mouth so that the steam goes directly through your throat. This will help to loosen any hardened matter in your throat and respiratory tract. You can add a few drops of Eucalyptus oil to the water just before you start your inhalation as this oil is very effective in treating congestion and will increase the flow of mucus and allow it to be easily expelled from your body.

Ginger and onion are also very helpful in eliminating congestion. You can chop up an onion along with a small piece of ginger. Add a few spoons of sugar to this and leave it undisturbed in a small bowl for about 20 minutes. After that, drain the liquid from the bowl and add a spoon of honey to it. Have this tonic to get rid of the congestion and soothe any inflammation or irritation of the throat.
