Constipation is a very common health condition that many individuals experience on a regular basis. Constipation is in fact one of the most common gastrointestinal problem. Irregular bowel movements, straining in order to pass stools and dry or hard stools are characteristic traits of this condition.

It is very difficult to determine the exact definition of irregular bowel movements, as each individual possess a different metabolic rate. Therefore, for convenience sake, the passing of stools less than three times a week is considered as irregular bowel movements. This leads to constipation. An individual who experiences this condition more than twice a month is said to have chronic constipation, which could lead to piles or other gastrointestinal problems.

Fortunately, constipation can be treated quite effectively with the help of simple home remedies as well as certain dietary and lifestyle changes. The main cause of constipation is a lack of dietary fiber and water. In order to understand why this happens, it is important to know how the digestive tract functions. Under normal circumstances, the waste products created by the digestive tract are transferred to the colon with the help of muscle contractions. During these contractions the fiber present in the intestinal tract helps in propelling the waste matter into the colon. The colon absorbs water and salt content from the waste before eliminating it out of the body through the rectum. In the absence of dietary fiber this process of eliminating waste from the body becomes slower, thus the colon absorbs excess amounts of water from the stools making it hard, dry and difficult to pass. Here are a few suggestions that will help to get rid of constipation effectively.
  • The first thing is to ensure that your mother drinks plenty of water throughout the day. At her age she may not feel thirsty too often, however the body requires at least three liters of water. You should make sure that your mother drinks at least three liters of water everyday.
  • Honey is a natural laxative and lemon juice helps in keeping the body hydrated. You can give your mother two teaspoons of honey mixed with warm water on an empty stomach every morning. Adding the juice of half a squeezed lemon to this solution will prove very beneficial too.
  • Ensure that your mother consumes foods that are rich in dietary fiber. Baked beans, boiled beet, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, broccoli, and spinach are a few examples of vegetables rich in fiber content. Apples, bananas, peach, pear, musk melon, water melon, and strawberries are some fruits that are rich sources of fiber as well as other essential vitamins.
  • Half a teaspoon of almond oil mixed in a warm glass of milk is also effective when it comes to treating constipation.
