Gout is also known as ‘the disease of kings’ or ‘the rich man’s disease’. This is because gout essentially occurs due to the presence of a high level of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is the waste product that is left behind in the body when purine is broken down by the digestive system.
Purine is mainly present in rich foods like red meats, dairy products, and alcohol. Therefore, gout is considered to be a rich man’s disease. Gout is a very painful condition which causes the joints in the body to become inflamed and swollen. Although it can affect anyone, men are at a higher risk of developing this painful condition. There are various home remedies that are helpful in relieving the pain and swelling caused by gout temporarily. However, it would be very beneficial if you take a holistic approach towards this condition, this will help you avoid future encounters with this unpleasant condition.
- Diet plays an important role in avoiding gout problems. This is because gout is caused by excess amounts of uric acid in the blood. Therefore, a person experiencing gout should avoid consuming red meats, dairy products, crabs, lobsters, liver, and other related food products. Alternately, consuming foods that are high in complex carbohydrates like fiber rich vegetables, fruits, and whole grains is strongly recommended. Some of the fruits that a patient experiencing gout can indulge in are fresh cherries, blueberries and strawberries, bananas, pineapple and other fruits rich in vitamin C content. Among vegetables, one must include celery, tomatoes, red cabbage, red bell peppers, and other green leafy vegetables. You may also include certain fish like salmon and tuna in your diet as they are good sources of omega 3 fatty acids.
- Lemon is very effective when it comes to treating gout problems. Lemon contains vitamin C that helps in dissolving uric acid crystals that get deposited on the joints of the bones due to this condition. Mix the juice of one lemon in 250 ml of boiled water and drink this juice at least 3 times a day for effective relief.
- Organic apple cider vinegar is also very effective in treating gout. Mix one teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar with one teaspoon of honey for effective results. Consume this tonic twice a day for effective results.
- You may apply cold or warm compresses on the affected joints of your body in order to relieve the painful swelling and inflammation.
- Practicing yoga will also help you cope with gout in an effective manner. Yoga poses concentrate on stimulating the mind, stretching the muscles, and strengthening the bones, thus making the body more alert and active.
