Home Remedy for Headache

Intense, head pain. What causes it? Any remedies to ease the pain?
(23 Feb 2010)

Intense pain in the head can be caused by a variety of reasons and it is very difficult to ascertain the cause without proper examination. More often, headache is only a symptom and not the disease itself. To effectively treat the pain, it is required to find out the exact cause and then start treatment accordingly.

It is also to be remembered that recurring and intense head pain may indicate some serious underlying disease, so, to put speculations at rest, it’s important that proper medical diagnosis is carried out at the earliest. Anyway, serious diseases aside, headache can be caused by sinusitis, migraine, eye strain, high blood pressure, infection, nutritional deficiency, allergy, and sometimes by coming in contact with toxic substances. However, besides these, there may be several other reasons that can trigger intense headaches.

Here are some of the common remedies that you can try out. However, it is advisable that you seek proper medical diagnosis and advice in case the headache shows no sign of going away with these common remedial methods. You can start by massaging the forehead, neck, and shoulders. You can do this yourself, or better still, get someone else to do the massage on you. The other most commonly used technique is to apply hot or cold compress on the affected area. Use an ice pack on the forehead and the back of your neck and keep it pressed on for about a few minutes. Similarly, you can also apply a hot pad on the affected area to soothe the pain. Hot water foot bath is also considered to be helpful in alleviating headache. For this, you have to keep you feet soaked in a bucket of warm water for about 15-20 minutes each day and continue the process for about a week or two. Lemon juice can also be beneficial as a natural remedy for headache. Squeeze fresh lemon juice, make it into a cool drink, and drink it. Else, you can also take slices of freshly cut lemon and rub it over the affected area.

Besides these, you should maintain a proper diary of how and when this headache gets triggered. Keep an eye on whether proximity of certain substances has a tendency to bring on the headache. Or, whether some change in lifestyle – like sleeping pattern, stress level, or eating habit – is responsible for it. Studying this diary carefully will help you understand your headache better. Finally, you should eat healthy – avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and smoking. You should also give yourself sufficient sleep and try to cut down on stress levels.
