An overactive bladder is also referred to as an atonic bladder, or a flaccid bladder. Detrusor is that muscle which helps in controlling the emptying of one’s bladder; it is a very strong muscle that involuntarily creates a strong and at times uncontrolled urge or pressures to empty the bladder. Detrusor overactivity is now treatable and has various symptoms that include frequent urge to urinate.

If the urge is really very strong and uncontrollable it is imperative that you see a specialist. Also post menopause the quantity of estrogen that is produced in the body lowers thus leading to the thinning and reducing of the vaginal tissue and the vulvar tissue that is around the urethra thus causing drooping and also feeble emptying of the bladder. There are various reasons why women can suffer from an overactive bladder. At times natural childbirth can be a factor in this if the birth has occurred in the last two years. It can lead to an automatic loss of one’s bladder control. Other causes could include any injury that could have been sustained either internally or otherwise. If this condition is neglected, it could worsen and cause severe problems later. Anxiety has also been known to be a cause of loss of bladder control in some people. When these people suffer from an anxiety bout or attack they tend to lose control over their bladder. This is referred to as a psycho somatic condition or association. It simply means that when the people get nervous they start to urinate. This can be the result of a childhood habit. This might require psychological help in dealing with and correcting this condition.

Some simple steps to follow which can help reduce this problem are to make sure that whenever you urinate, it should be done properly and totally. If you urinate quickly when in a hurry you may end up not emptying your bladder fully. This can then result in the condition of an overactive bladder. It is known to be the cause of other problems too. Using the bathroom correctly will help in this problem of incontinence. Try doing an exercise on a daily basis that involves contracting one’s vaginal and urinal opening for approximately 5 minutes. Start doing this for a few seconds and then gradually lead up to 5 minutes a day. It is known to be highly effective. It also helps to know how to control one’s nature calls. This particularly helps in stretching the bladder. Always remember to drink plenty of fluids and keep dehydration down. It is beneficial to avoid smoking, chewing tobacco, caffeine and similar habits.
