Respiratory tract infections are generally short-lived and do not last for more than two weeks. Since you had a cough for over three months, it is obvious that there was a more serious underlying problem. Since this problem has resurfaced, it would be wise to keep a diary and record your symptoms as this can be very useful in determining the exact progress of this condition.
Make sure that you visit your doctor and if possible get a second opinion. You can also make sure that your immune system is strengthened by following a healthy diet plan. Make sure that your diet consists of at least two medium-sized helpings of fruits and vegetables daily. You should also include protein-rich foods like skinless chicken and eggs in your daily diet as protein is essential for a healthy immune system. Omega fatty acids are also important for the proper functioning of the immune system and so you should include flaxseeds and salmon and tuna in your daily diet.
Common respiratory infections would have shown up in the tests and so it is also possible that your condition has not been caused by a pathogen but is actually an allergic reaction. You could be allergic to a certain substances in your environment. Once you inhale these particles, they cause an allergic reaction which would be the dry cough. An allergic reaction to pollen or even certain chemicals in your detergent or soap powder can cause a reaction. If you have recently started using a different detergent, you can switch back to your old one to determine if the new detergent contains the allergen that is causing the cough. If your condition does not change, you can assume that the detergent is not the cause of your cough. If however, you find that your cough has disappeared, you can assume that you have found your trigger. To make sure of this, you can wait for a few days and then switch detergents again. When your cough returns, you can be certain that this is the culprit and you will have to avoid this detergent from now on. It is also possible that you could have an allergic reaction to certain fibers so if you are using new bed sheets or you have new upholstery, you may have to perform the same exercise as you did with the detergent.
You can also speak to your doctor about the various allergy tests that you can take in order to discover the allergen.
