Coughs and colds are possibly the most commonly occurring conditions that we seek treatment for. In most cases a cold or cough can be treated quite effectively at home itself, with some simple and natural methods. A cough serves as your body’s natural defense mechanism against a variety of infections, and also against the excessive accumulation of mucus that could obstruct airflow.
Unfortunately, the irritation, discomfort, and pain from a cough are things that we are all familiar with.
Because of the frequency with which common colds and coughs strike most people prefer to use natural methods of treatment and with good reason. Frequent reliance on pharmaceutical products does not just pose the threat of long term ill effects, but it also poses the risk of creating drug resistance. Moreover, antibiotics are only effective against bacterial infections, and coughs and colds are very often caused by exposure to environmental irritants or due to viral infections. The only remedy in such cases is to minimize exposure to the irritant or relieve the symptoms and strengthen your body’s immunity while the infection resolves naturally. Natural methods of treatment are therefore the best solution for treating a cough.
Here are some popular and effective natural remedies for a cough:
- The most widely known and common remedy for a cough or sore throat is the salt water gargle, and although you may think you’ve heard this before, it still is worth reiterating the effectiveness of this remedy. Remember however, that this is no magic cure and it needs to be backed up with self care and a couple of other remedies, all of which need to be followed diligently. This done, it can be the most effective treatment for a cough. Do this at least twice or thrice a day.
- Prepare a mixture of honey with ginger juice extract mixed in and have a teaspoon of the same twice or thrice a day.
- A mixture of long pepper, black pepper powder, and dry ginger, in equal proportions, can also be used as a remedy for a cough. Simply mix the ingredients with honey and consume a teaspoon of the solution twice or thrice a day.
- Drink a lot of water and keep yourself well hydrated.
- Avoid eating oily and spicy foods. Soups, broths, and fresh vegetables work best.
- Herbal teas can also be very soothing for the throat.
- Keeping in mind the possibility that the cough is possibly the result of exposure to irritants try and keep track of foods or environmental factors that could have triggered the cough, such as smoke, certain foods or cold beverages, or even dust, and pet dander. Avoid exposure to any such elements.
- Atmospheric dryness can be particularly problematic and worsen a cough particularly when you have indoor heating or cooling. To compensate for the loss of humidity, use a humidifier.
