Backaches are one of the commonest problems we suffer from. It is also referred to as dorsalgia. At times the pain can get really severe and can result in a pain that is almost constant.

Sometimes bending sideways or bending forward can become too painful. This pain normally starts off in the nerves, muscles, joints or bones or any other structures along the spine. Low back pain is referred to as lumbago. Back pain can be broken up into upper back pain, neck pain, tailbone pain or lower back pain. It can occur after an accident or some sort of trauma or if there has been a fracture or any injury to the spine. Sometimes psychological factors like stress or dysfunctional family relationships can also be the cause.

If the problem is chronic then keeping warm and drinking hot drinks helps. Eating garlic on a daily basis can help ease backache. Drinking a portion made from the leaves of the holy basil plant can aid in reducing the pain. Boil approximately 10 to 12 leaves until the solution halves and it becomes thick and syrupy. Add salt to this mixture and drink it twice daily. Another good remedy for back pain is getting a massage with mustard oil. Even eucalyptus oil has proven to be beneficial in curing the pain. Massage in general goes a long way in soothing an aching back. Separately, try making a mixture of approximately 5 to 6 cloves, some pepper corns and a gram of dried ginger which has been powdered. Add this mixture to your tea and drink it daily. If there is an inflammation on the back try applying an ice pack to soothe the pain. After a few days you can switch to applying heat and warmth to the back. Remember to include carrot, tomato, cabbage, lettuce, cucumber or spinach to your diet.  Always sleep on a firm mattress and try to avoid sleeping with your face down.  Do exercises for your back on a daily basis, it helps strengthen the back even further and reduce back pain.

Sometimes try taking a hot bath with Epsom salts. Fill the bath tub with water and after adding the Epsom salts soak in it, keep adding hot water to keep the water temperature up. Do this as often as possible or as you like. Epsom salt or magnesium sulfate has both anti-arthritic properties and anti –inflammatory properties. Magnesium is one of the essential minerals required by the body and this can be of great help in soothing your back pain.
