A toothache is defined as pain in and around a tooth. In general, a toothache is the result of tooth decay or infection. Tooth decay can be caused by poor dental hygiene or it can be partly inherited.

Other common causes for a toothache could be an abscessed tooth, earache, injury to the jaw or sinusitis. Sometimes a tooth abscess can perforate into the bone and start to drain into the surrounding tissues which can then lead to facial swelling in and around the afflicted area.

Good oral hygiene can help prevent tooth decay. Applying clove oil on the afflicted tooth is recommended to reduce the pain. You can also apply a tea bag dipped in chilled water against the toot to relieve the pain. Tannic acid found in tea is known to be anti-inflammatory in nature. Try mixing a clove of garlic with a pinch of rock salt and applying this on the tooth. Similarly, a paste made from bay berry and vinegar and applied on the affected tooth helps in reducing the pain. It is beneficial in strengthening gums.  Chewing a raw onion daily is considered beneficial in protecting you from a host of tooth disorders as the bactericidal properties of onion can kill all the germs in your mouth. You can make a mixture consisting of a dash of pepper powder and a quarter teaspoon of salt. This serves as a powerful dentifrice and is known to prevent cavities, bleeding gums and painful gums. Extract the juice of wheat grass and use as a mouthwash and gargle. Wheat grass helps draw out the toxins from the gums and thus helps in checking bacterial growth.

A balanced healthy diet is an important prerequisite for good dental health. The diet should consist of plenty of raw vegetables, whole wheat bread and whole food. This helps keep your teeth and jaw bones healthier. A low sugar diet is also strongly recommended as bacteria in your mouth break sugars down into acids which then combine with calcium in the enamel resulting in decay or erosion. Similarly, it is advisable to restrict the intake of refined carbohydrates, pastries, soft drinks and candy. Regular flossing, along with proper brushing with fluoride toothpaste and regular professional cleaning is vital in preventing tooth decay. Brushing after meals can help reduce the possibilities of getting a tooth infection. Remember to clean your teeth using a circular brushing motion. Massaging your gums increases the blood circulation and helps promote healthier gums too.
