Hemorrhoids, more commonly known as piles is a common condition that affects many people around the world. This condition occurs when the veins present in the lower rectum get inflamed or swollen. Although, piles or hemorrhoids can be experienced by people of all age groups, individuals who indulge in extreme physical activities and people who are older than 50 years in age are more prone to this condition.
In order to understand why these two groups of people are more prone to this condition, let us examine the factors influencing this condition. Excessive straining during bowel movements, sitting in a particular position for a long period of time, sitting in the toilet for long hours, and performing extreme physical activities like cycling, weight lifting or running for a prolonged period of time, causes the tissues in the lower rectum to lose its elasticity. This causes the veins to swell and get inflamed. Since the tissues lose their elasticity with age, elderly people who need to strain excessively during bowel movements, due to chronic constipation are affected by this condition. In the case of athletes, or people indulging in heavy work the excessive pressure placed on the muscles of the lower rectum causes the tissues present in the anus to lose its elasticity.
Fortunately, hemorrhoids can be treated effectively with the help of a few simple home remedies:
- The most common cause of piles is chronic constipation. Therefore, the most basic remedy when it comes to treating hemorrhoids is to consume food that is rich in fiber content. Fiber is very important in transporting the waste produced by the digestive tract to the colon. In the absence of fiber, an individual requires to strain excessively in order to get rid of the waste matter on his own. Foods like cabbage, broccoli, whole grain bread and pulses are excellent sources of fiber. Fruits like apples, pears and water melons are also useful when it comes to treating piles.
- Drink plenty of water in order to avoid constipation. Start your day with a warm glass of water in order to stimulate effective bowel movements.
- Avoid sitting in a particular position for a long period of time. If your work demands that you maintain a constant position, try taking a walk after every hour.
- Apply cold compresses on the inflamed area in order to gain effective relief from the pain and swelling. You may also soak in a warm bath to experience effective relief from the pain. You can also apply aloe vera juice in order to soothe the itchy sensation.
- Always wear a jockstrap while working out, as this eases the pressure on the tissues present in the lower rectum.
