Tonsillitis is a common condition in which the tonsils that are lymphoid tissues present on each side at the back of the throat get inflamed. This occurs due to the presence of a virus or a bacterial infection. However, in most cases a virus is the primary cause of this painful and irritating condition.
Tonsillitis can be categorized into the following three types; acute, subacute and chronic. The first type is caused by a viral infection and the other two types are caused by a bacterial infection, the only difference being that chronic tonsillitis last for a longer period. Please visit your doctor for an effective diagnosis when feeling in the throat. However, if your condition does not show signs of improvement within two days from following these remedies, please visit a throat specialist immediately.
- Ginger and garlic are very effective when it comes to treating tonsillitis. Ginger possesses gingerols which contain anti bacterial and analgesic (painkiller) properties. Garlic contains effective anti bacterial, anti fungal and anti viral properties. Thus increasing ones dietary intake of ginger and garlic proves beneficial in getting rid of tonsillitis. You can simply chew on a raw piece of ginger or garlic; however, including them in your soup is a better option, as they lend a distinct taste to soups.
- Keep your throat moist and warm at all times. You can ensure this by drinking plenty of warm water. This will help in getting rid of the viral infection and will also make sure that your body remains hydrate.
- For another simple yet effective home remedy, gargle your mouth with warm salt water. Salt contains iodine which is very important in ensuring the smooth functioning of the thyroid glands and warm water helps soothe the throat irritation.
- You can also drink a warm glass of milk to which half a teaspoon of turmeric has been added. Turmeric possesses effective anti bacterial properties and provides instant relief from the pain and itchy sensation.
