Excess levels of blood sugar will, over a period of time, damage various parts of the body with the nervous system being one particularly susceptible area.
There are many different causes of neuropathy. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of neuropathy. There are also plenty of cases where doctors are unable to specifically identify the causes of neuropathy. The diagnosis of the condition is a complicated process that requires a full medical evaluation. Since neuropathy is not a specific condition, it is often undiagnosed for long periods of time. The difficulty in establishing the causes of neuropathy in a patient makes it difficult to treat the condition. Often, the symptoms of neuropathy are treated while the doctor continues to investigate what could be causing the problem.
Neuropathy treatment, like the condition, is extremely variable from case to case. Some cases may feature treatment for neuropathy in the form of medication and topical creams. Other forms of neuropathy treatment would include the use of physical therapy. Anti-depressant medications may also be used for neuropathy treatment. One aspect of neuropathy treatment is associated with the lifestyle of the individual. There are studies that show that various vitamin deficiencies and various unhealthy practices such as alcohol consumption which are contributing causes of neuropathy. A patient who has been diagnosed with neuropathy needs to change these lifestyle patterns in order to stop the progress of the condition. Neuropathy treatment is likely to be ineffective if the patient continues to follow the same lifestyle patterns that have been identified as contributing causes of neuropathy.
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of neuropathy in the feet and legs. Neuropathy in the feet and legs occurs because of the various problems associated with diabetes. These peripheral parts of the body are the primary location for such problems to occur. Patients suffering from diabetes should take special care to ensure that the blood circulation to their legs is sufficient. Such patients would also need to make wholesome changes to their lifestyle as the condition of diabetes will contribute to a number of health problems.
With the legs being particularly susceptible to neuropathy, it is important to ensure that these parts of the body are kept in as good shape as possible. Positions of sitting and standing create pressure on these parts of the body and can cause neuropathy pain. Exercise should be done to strengthen these areas and boost blood circulation. This would improve the health of the area and would most definitely prevent new neuropathy from occurring. Whether this would lead to the repair of damaged nerves depends on how severe the condition of neuropathy is.
