Anal fissures can be extremely unpleasant and is often downright painful. An anal fissure is a small rip or tear of the anal lining that can cause a passage of blood with stools, itching and excruciating pain. In most cases these fissures occur along the mid line, which would mean the top or bottom of the anus.

The condition is a lot more common and prevalent than most people think it to be, and this is largely attributed to the poor quality of our diets and modern lifestyles.

Severe or chronic constipation is probably the most common cause of anal fissures as the anal tissue can get damaged with bowel movements, when passing a hard stool, damaging the anal lining. This can therefore be indirectly traced to low fiber diets.

Although the most common cause, the condition can also be caused due to any excessive pressure in the anal sphincters, and could therefore also include severe or chronic diarrhea and inflammation of the area as possible causes. Other more specific, but less common causes include the development of fissures during childbirth, during anal intercourse or the insertion of any foreign body. At times the condition may be caused as a result of another condition such as Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease, tuberculosis, and HIV infection among others.

The symptoms of anal fissures can be painful and worrying:
  • Passage of bowel movements accompanied with severe burning, stinging or pain, before, after, and during.
  • You may also notice specks of blood on the toilet bowl or tissue.
  • In some cases an anal fissure may be quite painless but cause intermittent bleeding.

The good news is that anal fissures can be treated quite easily at home, with half of them healing naturally. Natural remedies for anal fissures don’t simply include concoctions, but dietary and lifestyle medications are the mode of treatment. No medication, natural or pharmaceutical can offer a long term solution against conditions like piles or anal fissures without appropriate dietary changes. This can be seen as a natural warning sign of changes needed in your diet and lifestyle. Here are some key considerations:
  • Increase your fluid intake.
  • Switch to a diet that is high in fiber. Fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole meal foods are the best choices.
  • Use natural stool softeners. Many fruits and vegetables work like natural stool softeners eliminating the need for medications. Figs soaked in water overnight and consumed the following morning is just one such remedy. Including lady fingers, dates, and apricots in your daily diet will also help significantly. Keep in mind however, that the healing value of all fruits and vegetables is severely reduced by over cooking or frying.
  • Avoid straining and take your time passing stools.
  • Sitz baths can offer considerable relief.
  • Avoid consuming spicy foods as well as sharp foods like chips, nuts and tortillas that may not be thoroughly digested.
The condition should heal within a week or a few days, but in severe cases, such as chronic anal fissures it could take as long as six weeks.
