The common cold is one of the most persistent and widespread infections. The world over millions of us seek treatment against the cold, but most conventional treatments have little to offer against this menace, and most effective treatments come with a price, not just monetary, but in terms of health too. Because of the recurrent nature of common cold infections most of us prefer not use pharmaceutical products to treat the problem as frequent usage of drugs does not bode well for us.

Moreover, frequent reliance on medications and treatment with antibiotics can lead to drug resistance requiring treatment with stronger dosages on each consequent occasion. Natural treatments are therefore the preferred mode of treatment for such common conditions.

To treat a common cold at home you don’t need to pore over a stove concocting and brewing potions that will cure the condition.

Simple household ingredients and basic self care practices can help treat and cope with the condition. Consuming warm and hot fluids through the day can help and you are right to assume the benefits of home made teas against a common cold. Simply drinking hot tea can help soothe the throat and prevent a sore throat that so often accompanies a cold, as a result of breathing through the mouth. Herbal teas are however the most effective of treatments that are meant for consumption. Ginger, chamomile or peppermint teas are often recommended as treatments against the common cold. You can prepare these teas and sip on them through the day as and when desired.

Make sure that you also consume a lot of water to keep your system well hydrated. The most effective form of treatment against any cold or respiratory infection however involves steam inhalation. Simply breathe in the steam from a bowl of hot water under a canopy (to keep the steam from escaping) for a few minutes. Do this only for as long as you can bear, and be careful not to burn yourself. If done carefully, this will prove to be the most effective treatment. It would also be advisable to add a few drops of eucalyptus oil or peppermint oil to the steaming water.

In addition to these treatments there are other remedies like a ginger honey mixture, garlic soups, or chicken soup that you can choose from. You can also have hot water baths, and make sure you get adequate rest. Do not over exert yourself. Herbal remedies like echinacea and goldenseal are also effective against a cold.
