Cure Cracked Lips

Cracked lips
(27 Oct 2009)

Cracked lips is a very common problem especially during summer and winter. You are most susceptible to chapping when there is a sudden change in climate. Cracked lips can be treated with regular lip care that ensures that the dead skin on your lips is removed and that the skin below is kept well moisturized at all times.

It is very important that you do not peel or pick at your lips as this can injure the fragile skin and cause your lips to bleed and can even cause a minor skin infection. Before you remove the dead skin, it would be wise to soften it up as much as possible as this will allow it to slough off easily. You can apply petroleum jelly to your lips and allow it to remain on for at least an hour before you attempt to exfoliate your lips. If there is a lot of thickened dead skin on your lips, it would be wise to apply a thick layer to your lips before you go to bed and only use a scrub in the morning when the skin has completely softened. To exfoliate your lips you can use a lip scrub. If you wish to, you can make your own lip scrub which will not contain all the added chemical preservatives and dyes that a store-bought lip scrub would contain. You will need a little castor oil, lemon juice, gram flour and some sugar to make your lip scrub. Mix about 5 drops each of the lemon juice and the castor oil along with a pinch of gram flour and a few sugar granules. The consistency of this paste should be thick but not chunky. Instead of using gram flour and sugar, you can use rice flour. Apply this paste to your lips and then very gently massage it into your skin. Use circular motions especially at the edges of your lips as this will allow the loose skin to come off easily. Keep doing this until all the excess skin has been removed. If at any point, you experience any pain, stop using the scrub. You can always use this method once more the following day to take care of any excess skin that was left behind. After you se a lip scrub make sure that you use a good moisturizer as this will ensure that your lips do not crack. You can make your own lip moisturizer by mixing equal quantities of olive oil, jojoba oil and almond oil. Mix this blend of oils with double the amount of water and store it in a small bottle. Use this as a healthy lip moisturizer as and when needed.
