Heartburn is a burning sensation that you feel in chest and throat after a night of heavy eating or a stressful event. Extra stomach acid leads to that burning sensation. The intensity of the burn can vary and the more frequent the burn, the more serious the condition of heartburn.
The acid reflux in heartburn is one of the common symptoms of heartburn. Gases, indigestion, nausea, burning sensation are all interlinked causes of heartburn.
What causes heartburn? The causes of heartburn are largely lifestyle related. Overeating, spicy food, binge drinking and smoking and even pregnancy, all can cause heartburn. Though it is called heartburn, it has nothing to do with the heart and is a digestion problem. If the heartburn is not remedied, it can lead to serious and painful complications like ulcers and esophageal bleeding. There are many remedies to treat heartburn but they treat the symptoms of heartburn rather than the cause. Home remedies for heartburn relief are many and the home remedies tend to tackle the problem of heartburn rather than the symptoms.
What would be required of you is that you firstly make an initial lifestyle change. Get rid of heartburn by avoiding heartburn-prone foods like spicy and rich food. Eat healthy food. Eat smaller portion and frequent meals. To treat the causes of heartburn at night, avoid eating dinner too late. You should sleep or lie down only after about 2 hours after having your dinner. Do away completely with late night snacking as it interferes with digestion and increases your chances of heartburn. You should also avoid food that is known to cause heartburn like spicy foods, coffee, citrus fruits.
Change your sleeping posture, wear comfortable clothes to bed and completely avoid smoking and drinking for short term relief. If you still see relief from the heartburn symptoms, you should take antacids. Despite that if there isn’t any relief, you should consult a doctor.
Causes of heartburn in the morning are usually chronic and result from bad attack of heartburn in the night. You should avoid caffeine, fried fatty foods and sour items. You could eat small, wholesome meals like that of a salad and maybe one slice of bread. Since heartburn is triggered with stress, you should also consider aspects of life that you can de-stress. For heartburn in children and women, you should follow the same guidelines of short and healthy meals, less fat and oil and more rest.
Children, including babies and teenagers, sometimes suffer from gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD. This is when an acid reflux is caused by none of the other normal causes that result in heartburn in adults. When babies have GERD, and they are not burped after being fed, they usually have a milk reflux or a wet burp. GERD sometimes causes vomiting in children. The child should be taken to a doctor as conventional home remedies do not work here.
Some home remedies for heart burn include eating some raw garlic or eating garlic soaked in apple cider vinegar, eating bananas and papayas or taking a drink of apple cider vinegar and baking soda. These are all home remedies that usually work in adults who have heartburn.
Heartburn during pregnancy is often caused from an increased level of progesterone in the body. The key is to eat smaller meals to avoid the sensation of feeling full. By the third trimester, you become more prone to heartburn as the enlarged uterus presses against the stomach and allows the acid to pass into the esophagus.
Get rid of heartburn naturally especially in pregnancy with home remedies. Try eating yogurt, or milk with some honey. Sometimes chewing gum after a meal can help too. Avoid tomato based products as well as caffeine and carbonated drinks. Avoid drinking a lot of fluids when you are eating as it could distend your stomach, further increasing heart burn.

There is acid naturally secreted in the stomach to digest food. When small amounts of this acid move up into the oesophagus or the tube which carries food from the mouth to stomach, it is called as reflux and heartburn occurs. This causes a burning sensation or pain behind the breast bone. Many people suffer from heartburn sometime or the other. Heartburn is a digestive problem – not a heart problem. It is related to the food you consume and posture. It is often treated by remedies for indigestion.
