Piles is also known as hemorrhoids, and is a painful condition to deal with. It occurs when an individual overexerts the muscles around the lower rectum area causing the tissues to lose their elasticity and stretch. This causes the veins held by the tissues in this region to become swollen and inflamed.

Actions such as straining during a bowel movement, strenuous cycling, and weightlifting are some of the main causes of this condition. Sitting in a constant position for lengthy periods of time can also bring about this condition. Age is also a significant factor and so Piles is more common among people who are 50 years or older in age.

This is due the simple fact - with time the tissues present in the rectum lose their elasticity, thus they are unable to bear any sever strain and pressure exerted on them. Therefore, when faced with such pressure the tissues expand, but are unable to come back into their actual position. However, although observed among elderly people, piles can affect anyone. Pregnant woman are at a higher risk of experiencing piles due to the added pressure caused by the weight of their baby.

In most cases, people experiencing piles will notice at least one of these symptoms:
•    Severe itching and irritation in the anal region.
•    Blood in the stools, or bleeding while passing stools.
•    Severe pain and discomfort while sitting or sleeping on your back.
•    A boil or lump that is painful near the opening of the anus.
•    Hemorrhoids extending beyond the anus and hanging outside the rectum.
The symptoms displayed by this condition depend on the location of the occurrence. External piles or protruding piles can be seen and felt easily, as they occur on the outside on the rectum. On the other hand internal piles cannot be seen or felt, as it lies inside the rectum. External piles are far more painful and can be treated immediately, as it can be detected easily. Internal piles are relatively difficult to detect, and treatment begins only after the condition has worsened or transformed into external piles.

Piles can be avoided by following a few lifestyle changes, and these suggestions can be implemented by people across all age groups and ethnic diversities.
•    Increase your intake of foods rich in fiber content. Fiber helps with transporting food from the intestines to the colon and from the colon to the rectum. In the absence of fiber this process is slowed down, thus leading to constipation.
•    Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water keeps the body hydrated and the stools soft.
•    If you indulge in strenuous activities like weightlifting, outdoor sports or cycling, wear an athletic supporter. This will help in keeping your rectum muscles firm and tight, thus reducing any strain and pressure in this region.
