Causes of Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids
(15 Oct 2009)

Hemorrhoids is more famously referred to as piles. Although it is never discussed openly, piles or hemorrhoids is not an uncommon condition. People experiencing this painful condition do not like to talk about it, due to the social stigma attached to this health condition.

However, this painful condition should be dealt with immediately in order to avoid further complications. This condition is said to occur when the veins present in a patients anal or lower rectum area become inflamed and swollen. Hemorrhoids is most commonly noticed in people who are above 50 years old, although it can affect just about anyone. The main cause behind the occurrence of this condition is straining, or over exerting the tissues present in the anal region. With age the tissues lose their elasticity, and hence this condition is more noticeable among people who are 50 years or older in age.

Straining during bowel movements, chronic constipation, old age, pregnancy, sitting in the toilet for long hours, pregnancy and strenuous exercises like weight lifting and cycling are the main factors that can bring about this painful condition. All the above activities put a lot of strain on the tissues present around the anal region, thus causing it to bulge out. Hemorrhoids can be of two kinds: internal hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids.

Internal hemorrhoids take place when the affected vein swells inside the rectum. This kind of piles are hard to detect as they cannot be seen or felt, and are reported only once the condition has become severe. People experiencing internal hemorrhoids most often notice blood in their stools, as the stools brush against the delicate surface of the inflamed vein, causing it to bleed.

External hemorrhoids can be detected easily as they occur just below the skin around the surface of an affected individual’s anus. External hemorrhoids is an extremely painful situation to deal with, as the most common actions like sitting or sleeping on the back side becomes extremely difficult.

The most common symptoms noticed by people experiencing this painful condition are: painful bowel movements accompanied with small amounts of blood, difficulty in passing normal stools, irritation and itching in the anal region, severe pain while passing stools and a swelling around the anal region. In certain cases leakage of feces and a painful lump near the anus may also be noticed.

Hemorrhoids can be treated at home if it is in the developing stages. In case of advanced internal or external hemorrhoids, medical intervention may be required, in order to treat the swollen vein.
