Burnt Tongue Remedies

How do I cure a burnt tongue
(15 Oct 2009)

In today’s fast paced world doing things quickly or in a hurry are the key to keeping pace with the others around us. From quick showers to quick conference calls, it’s all about doing things in the least possible amount of time. However, when one tries to follow the same routine while eating a hot meal, it often results in a burnt tongue, which is also referred to as a burning tongue syndrome.

This is a common condition and occurs when a hot substance is consumed. The most common symptoms of a burnt tongue are the formation of small white colored pustules on the surface of the tongue and a burning or itchy sensation on the surface of the tongue. In extreme cases discoloration of the tongue may also be noticed. Since the tongue remains moist most of the time, it heals quite quickly, without the help of formal medication. However, in serious cases medical treatment may be required in order to aid and speed up the healing process.

In superficial cases of a burnt tongue, home remedies are the most preferred form of treatment, as they speed up the healing process effectively.  Here are a few home remedies you may indulge in, to experience effective relief from the burning sensation felt by your tongue.
  • Drink plenty of cool water and fresh fruit juices. The cool water helps in soothing the burning sensation and helps in keeping the tongue moist. Fresh fruit juices contain essential vitamins and minerals that help in speeding up the healing process. Fresh fruit juices also help in stimulating the sore taste buds that are inflamed.
  • Avoid consuming spicy or hot food. Hot and spicy food will further aggravate your condition, as they will worsen the condition of the already inflamed nerves and taste buds present on the tongue. Consider eating fresh vegetables and salads instead, as they will also help in speeding up your recovery process.
  • Warm salt-water mouth rinses will also help in soothing any tongue irritation being felt by you. Salt contains calcium and iodine that is beneficial to the health of your tongue. Salt also possesses anti bacterial and anti fungal properties that will reduce the risk of infection.
  • In order to experience effective relief from the burning sensation you can suck on a cube of ice. Sucking on an ice candy would be the more attractive and satisfying option. You can make one at home by simply keeping half a glass of honey mixed with milk in the deep freezer until it becomes ice. Honey possesses effective anti bacterial qualities and is very effective in soothing an inflamed tongue.
