Anger is a normal human emotion that all of us experience at some time or the other. As with any other intense emotions like love or fear for that matter anger too can be overwhelming but it is just as necessary and important to a healthy individual. Unfortunately, in many individuals these emotions or a particular emotion may be so strong and overwhelming that it produces a response that is disproportionate to the circumstances.
Anger or chronic anger can be extremely problematic and dangerous not just to the individual affected, but to those involved in any interactions. The response to a stimulus is generally disproportionate and the individual may even cause physical harm to himself, to others or damage to property. At other times you may even find yourself in a rage and overcome with feelings of anger without any real cause or in the absence of stimuli.
The fact that you find that your anger is a problem is a positive step and since it is a problem you must also realize that it negatively affects your health and well being. It increases blood pressure and puts you at a higher risk of heart disease and strokes. Your cardio vascular health suffers. It affects your performance at the work place and in other tasks and can even cause other problems like depression, paranoia, insomnia and anxiety disorders among others. It severely affects social relationships and family life and restricts your ability to relax and enjoy life, as you rightly note that it keeps you from being happy. There is however a lot that can be done and there are many others who have suffered from severe cases of chronic anger, who are today well placed socially and happy. Anger problems take the control over your life out of your hands, and leaves it to the whims of mood swings.
In addition to help from counselors and self help groups here are some tips that can help you overcome your problem.
- When you feel yourself start to get angry seize control and take a timeout. Count to ten or twenty slowly and decisively. This can actually help defuse your temper.
- Take a break from the person or task that has been the cause of your anger and once you calm down, you can return.
- Once you’ve calmed down discuss the cause of your anger with the concerned individual in a non-confrontational manner.
- Physical activity, breathing exercises and meditation can also help you calm down tremendously. Yoga would probably the best discipline for you to take up, but other activities like swimming and jogging are also effective.
- Try not to speak when you are angry as you will end up saying things you regret later and your anger will only spiral further.
- Instead of focusing on what gets you angry, calm down and shift your focus to alternatives.
- When expressing yourself try not to sound accusatory.
- Learn not to hold a grudge as resentment and bitterness will only help aggravate your problem further. Forgiveness truly is a virtue.
- Relaxation techniques and stress management techniques can help significantly and will give you better control over your emotions and your response to them.
