Bad breath is an extremely embarrassing condition that most of us don’t realize is a medical concern and is referred to as halitosis. The main problem with the condition is that it can create feelings of awkwardness and low self esteem because of uneasiness in social interactions. Unfortunately the condition is easily preventable and reversible in most cases with proper dental hygiene.
Poor dental care is the single largest cause of the condition, although in many cases it may also be caused due to the presence of certain other conditions.
The main concern when dealing with this problem is identification of the cause as the only effective way to eliminate the problem is by elimination of the cause. It would therefore help to familiarize yourself with the causes described below.
Poor dental hygiene, alcoholism, smoking, chronic constipation, and poor dietary choices are among the most common causes. Specific disorders like diabetes may also increase the risk of developing the condition and hormonal, metabolic, and gastro intestinal disorders also increase the likelihood of halitosis. At times respiratory disorders or infections can also contribute to the problem. In these cases proper oral hygiene and treatment of the underlying condition will eliminate the foul odor.
One of the major causes of halitosis that should be of concern is dental decay. Halitosis could either be a symptom or cause of such dental decay that may include cavities, gum decay, gingivitis, bleeding gums, periodontal disease, and the very common formation of plaque and tartar deposits. In such situations only appropriate treatment from a dentist can help cure the problem. Bad breath in all of these situations is caused as a result of infection and this will be eliminated once the appropriate treatment has been administered.
It would also help to keep in mind that consumption of foods with volatile oil and also certain foods like onion and garlic can cause bad breath for hours after consumption. Dehydration or rather dryness of the mouth is another cause of bad breath that you should take note of. This is a common problem for many as it allows for the accumulation of dead cells and bacterial activity. Increasing your fluid intake is an effective counter to the problem.
High levels of oral hygiene with brushing of the teeth after meals, daily flossing, and regular cleansing of the tongue can help treat bad breath. In addition it is necessary to make regular visits to a dentist to detect and treat any possible dental conditions before they become a cause for concern.
