Toenail fungus occurs when the nails on a persons toe are infected by a fungal infection. This condition can also affect a person’s finger nails, and is not only restricted to one’s toes. This condition causes the nails to thicken, lose their color and eventually crumble.
Toenail fungus usually starts when the toenail develops yellow or white spots under its tips. As this spreads further it causes a lot of pain and discomfort. Toenail fungus occurs in between the nail and nail bed; therefore it is difficult to treat.
However, there are various home remedies that can help you treat this condition effectively. If your condition doesn’t improve after using the remedies mentioned below, please visit your doctor immediately.
- Topical antifungal medications prove beneficial when it comes to treating toe nail infection. This is because most toenail infections are caused by a group of fungi known as dermatophytes. Antifungal lotions help in containing the spread of these harmful fungi and soothe the pain caused by this condition. These are available at most leading pharmacies, and can be applied as per the instructions mentioned on the package.
- A common reason for the occurrence of this condition is swimming in public pools or indulging in steam baths. Fungi need moist places to thrive in; therefore the most common places from where people develop this condition are swimming pools and sauna rooms. It is therefore imperative that you wash your hands feet and your entire body after swimming or indulging in a sauna bath. Use an antiseptic soap or lotion while washing yourself, as this ensures that any fungi present on the skin is eliminated.
- Apple cider vinegar is believed to be effective when it comes to treating toenail fungus. Apple cider vinegar contains effective anti bacterial and anti fungal properties, and helps in soothing the affected toenail. You can soak you feet in a tub of water containing one part of apple cider vinegar for every two parts of water. Dip your feet in this solution for around 15 minutes daily. Avoid using this treatment if your skin shows signs of irritation.
- Tea tree oil is very effective in treating toenail fungus. Tea tree oil is a strong anti fungal agent that will eliminate any fungal growth present in your toenail. However, do not use undiluted tea tree oil - mix it with olive oil, as pure tea tree oil is very strong and will burn your skin. Let this mixture of tea tree and olive oil stay on your toenail overnight for effective results.
- Wear open footwear without socks for a few days until your condition improves. Fungi thrive in damp areas, therefore leaving your feet exposed to sunlight and air hampers the growth of fungi thus improving your condition.
