Tonsil pain is most often caused due a condition known as tonsillitis. This is not an uncommon condition, and occurs when the tonsils that are located at the back of the throat get inflamed. The most relevant causes of an inflamed tonsil are viral or bacterial infections.
Although tonsillitis is not a major health condition, it is very painful and makes common actions like swallowing food, drinking water and speaking very painful. Tonsillitis when caused by viral infections is treated with the help of over the counter remedies available for a sore throat. However, when caused by bacterial infection, antibiotics are the preferred form of treatment. In some rare cases a surgery also known as tonsillectomy may be conducted in order to remove the tonsils. However, this is only undertaken in the most severe form of the condition.
Home remedies prove quite effective when it comes to treating and preventing tonsillitis, thus getting rid of the subsequent pain.

Warm water helps in providing a soothing massage to your irritated painful throat. You can gargle with this solution thrice a day for effective results.
- Lemon is also very beneficial in alleviating the pain caused by this condition. Squeeze the juice out of a fresh lemon into a glass of warm water, add a teaspoon of honey to this and sip on this solution slowly. Lemons are rich source of vitamin C, which helps in keeping the throat moist. Honey has effective anti bacterial properties and will also help in soothing your throat pain. Drinking this solution in the morning will prove very effective.
- One teaspoon of turmeric mixed in a glass of warm milk will also help in soothing tonsil pain. Turmeric is very effective in soothing and clearing the throat. It also helps in getting rid of bacteria and provides a protective coating to the tonsils. You can drink this just before going to sleep at night.
- Avoid eating spicy food, drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking, while experiencing this condition, all the above mentioned factors can irritate your tonsils further.
