Natural Treatment for Kidney Stones

Home cure for kidney stone
(30 Sep 2009)

Kidney stones are quite a common occurrence and although not everyone may experience it, we are all very familiar with the problem. The condition basically refers to the formation of stones in the kidneys. These are oxalate stones that occur from the deposition of calcium phosphate, calcium oxalate, uric acid and cystine.

The condition is exceedingly painful. Particularly when attempting to urinate. Patients also experience and increased urge to urinate, but with barely any urine flow. In some cases the patient may also observe blood traces in the urine. Other possible symptoms include fevers, chills, vomiting, sweating and nausea.

Under normal circumstances there is a natural substance in urine that dissolves the minerals, preventing their crystallization to form kidney stones. Sometimes however, a poor intake of water or dehydration can prevent the salts from being properly dissolved and this can lead to crystallization. The stone size may vary from that of a grain of sand, to that of an egg. This formation from mineral deposits in the kidneys is more common in males, generally in middle life. There may also be a genetic predisposition towards the condition, so you are more likely to experience it if any of your family members have suffered the condition before. Kidney stones don’t always cause symptoms, but they do become problematic and show symptoms when they cause a blockage to the flow of urine.

Kidney stones can in most cases be treated effectively at home itself, with a combination of dietary measures and natural remedies.  Dietary modifications would to some extent depend on the nature of the stones, but the need to increase fluid intake is universal.
  • If you suffer from calcium stones it would be prudent to cut down on calcium rich foods like milk and other dairy products.
  • Try to avoid oxalate rich foods like beets, blueberries, beans, celery, green peppers, parsley, strawberries, grapes, spinach, summer squash, chocolate, and tea.
  • Consume watermelon and a lot of cranberry juice.
  • Increase your intake of vitamin A with foods like broccoli, cantaloupes, apricots, pumpkins, winter squash, and beef liver.
Protein rich foods should be cut down as they can increase the levels of uric acid and phosphorus in urine, increasing the risk of stones.
  • Cut down on your intake of salts, pickled and canned foods, and other salty foods.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol.
  • A cup of radish leaves juice, consumed daily can help treat kidney stones.
  • Kidney beans are also believed to work as a natural remedy for kidney stones.
