Piles is a not an uncommon condition, although people experiencing it don’t like talking about it, due to the social stigma attached to this condition. Piles are medically known as hemorrhoids. Although piles is seldom considered serious, it is a very painful condition, during which performing actions like sitting or walking, become extremely difficult.
Hemorrhoids or piles is commonly observed in people who are fifty years or older in age, although it could affect just about anyone. This is because the tissue around the rectum loses its elasticity with age and causes the veins to hang below the rectum. However, piles can also be brought about by over exertion of the rectum tissues, like applying excessive pressure while passing stools due to constipation, sitting down in the toilet for a prolonged period of time, or even due to long distance cycling or riding. Depending on the severity and nature, surgical removal or normal medication may be prescribed. In the mean while you may use these suggestions to speed up your recovery process.
- There are various over the counter corticosteroid creams that can prove effective when it comes to treating piles. These work by reducing the swelling and pain. Creams containing lidocaine are especially effective in this regards. As lidocain can be considered as a local anesthetic and antiarrhythmic drug.
- You may also apply the extract of witch hazel on your pile affected region to obtain relief and soothe the itchy sensation brought about by this condition. Make sure you use a cotton swab while doing so, as using your fingers could irritate your skin further.
- You may also indulge in sitz baths. Make sure the water is warm and not hot. As extremely hot water may cause your already inflamed tissues to worsen. You can add some baking soda to the water in order to treat the itchy sensation.
- Chronic constipation, exerting excessive pressure while passing stools (hard stools) and sitting in the toilet for a long time are the most common causes of piles. Therefore, eating the right kinds of food in order to stimulate normal bowel movements is imperative when it comes to treating piles. Fiber is very important in this regard. Consuming fiber rich food will ensure smooth bowel movements as well as softened stools, thus eliminating the pressure and time needed to pass stools.
- Wear a supporter if you indulge in strenuous activities like cycling, weightlifting and playing outdoor games.
- Practicing yoga is one of the best ways of avoiding piles due to old age, as yoga helps the muscles and tissues of the body in maintaining its elasticity.
