Diarrhea is one condition that we are all familiar with. Digestive disorders whether diarrhea, constipation or bloating are probably the most common of all health problems, and they stem largely from our dietary and lifestyle habits. Diarrhea refers to the frequent passage of stools that are of abnormally high liquid content.

Diarrhea in itself may not be a severe health risk, but it poses a very real threat of dehydration, which can be serious. Diarrhea is not restricted to any particular age group and can in fact affect absolutely anyone. Prolonged diarrhea can be particularly worrying because of the loss of fluids and nutrients.

Diarrhea can therefore be worrying in small children and the aged, because of rapid deterioration through dehydration.

Diarrhea can be caused by a variety of factors that could include overeating, improper digestion of foods, food poisoning, putrefaction in the digestive tract, bacterial or viral infections, and food allergies. There are a number of over the counter medications available for diarrhea, but these should be avoided as far as possible. Just like laxatives, these medications can also cause unpleasant side effects, and in some patients even lead to severe constipation. Electrolyte solutions that are available in all medical stores would however come in very handy as they are the best defense against dehydration.

The ideal strategy against diarrhea would therefore be to restrict dehydration by consuming electrolyte solutions and through dietary changes that do not stress the digestive system, giving it a chance to recover naturally. Try and consume a lot of probiotic curd and yogurt and fruit juices as these will help o settle your stomach and restore normalcy. Curd will also be very soothing and offer much needed relief from the symptoms like griping.

In addition to dietary changes, here are some more specific diarrhea remedies:

  • Apple peels are useful against diarrhea as they are rich in pectin, which is in fact a common ingredient in over the counter diarrhea medications. It is basically a soluble fiber that adds bulk to stools, giving a more solid consistency. You can simply make applesauce or an apple bake with the peels, but avoid having apple juice.
  • Use blackberry or raspberry leaves or roots to prepare teas that you should consume at least twice a day. They act as natural astringents to diarrhea.

Keep in mind that you should also avoid consuming any spicy or fatty foods and refined foods. Abstain from alcohol and other carbonated or aerated drinks as well.
