A sore throat is medically known as pharyngitis. A sore throat is most often caused by a viral infection, like in the case of influenza. Although a sore throat is not a disease or serious health condition, it is most often a warning sign or symptom of an underlying sickness or health condition.
The occurrences of sore throat are not uncommon as it is caused by viral infections. However, these are not the only causes for a sore throat, as this condition could also be caused by simple overstraining of your vocal chords or due to an allergic reaction to particular types of foods or medications. It could also be caused due to dehydration or a dry throat. Most often sore throat is a symptom of another health condition that may display other symptoms as well. Incase you only experience an itchy, swollen and dry throat, accompanied by difficulty in swallowing, you can treat it on your own by following simple home remedies. However, if you notice white patches on your tonsils or pus in your throat, vomiting, high fever and swollen tonsils, it could be a case of strep throat or tonsillitis. In this case please visit your doctor in order to obtain an accurate diagnosis on the same.
One of the most effective remedies when it comes to treating a sore throat is drinking plenty of warm water throughout the day. Warm water helps in keeping the sore throat moist, thus relieving the burning – itchy sensation. It will also make sure that any fluid lost by your body due to mucus production is replenished. Hot vegetable or chicken soup is also recommended for treating sore throats. However, you will need to add a good amount of ginger and garlic to this soup in order for it to be truly effective. Ginger and garlic are known for their anti-microbial, anti-bacterial and pain relieving qualities. When added to a soup, ginger and garlic soothe the throat and boost the body’s immune system. You can also drink a concoction made by adding two teaspoons of honey to lemon juice and water. This solution needs to be drunk warm, and not as a chilled cold drink. Honey has effective moisturizing properties that will provide instant relief to your throat. Lemon will help in getting rid of the mucus effectively. For another effective remedy, drink a glass of warm milk to which one teaspoon of turmeric has been added. Turmeric will provide your throat with a protective coating.
Gargling with warm salt water will also prove to be beneficial in treating your condition. Stay away from alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine products as these are known to aggravate throat irritation and sore throat.
