Tonsillitis is condition of inflammation that afflicts the tonsils, which are like fleshy pads towards the back of the throat on each side. Tonsillitis can occur as a bacterial or viral infection can affect the tonsils, causing inflammation and swelling that can be quite painful. Most cases of tonsillitis are caused as a result of viral infections and can therefore be treated at home with remedies basically addressed towards the symptoms.
Viral infections can not be cured with medications, and treatment can only be symptomatic. Bacterial infections on the other hand are generally treated with antibiotics. Removal of the tonsils through surgery should be avoided as far as possible, although in the past it was the most common treatment.
The tonsils are important to your immune system and surgery should only be used as a last resort.
Tonsillitis can be quite painful, particularly when attempting to ingest any foods or even liquids. You may also experience a fever or other symptoms like:
- A reddening of the tonsils
- A whitish or yellowish coating over the tonsils
- Glands in the neck feel swollen
Having a clear understanding of the causes can help you treat the condition a lot more effectively. Here are some simple natural remedies that should help you treat tonsillitis.
- A salt water gargle is the most important remedy for any infection of the tonsils or throat. It’s one that we are all familiar with, and it is extremely effective. Use a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and gargle as frequently as possible daily. This should help cleanse the tonsils and lessen the pain.
- You can also add some fenugreek seeds to hot water and allow the seeds to simmer. Gargle with this water to relieve the pain.
- Sponge baths, at least for the face, will help if suffering from fever.
- Hot soups and broths can relieve the throat and warm your body. Chicken soup is a particularly useful remedy for the soreness and inflammation.
- Add a pinch of turmeric powder and pepper powder to a glass of warm milk and down this every day.
- You can make a mixture of cucumber, beet and carrots for an effective juice to treat tonsillitis.
- Adequate rest is one of the most vital requirements as it will give your system a chance to recuperate.
