Morning sickness is a condition that all of us are familiar with, as it is likely to afflict at least half of all pregnant women. Morning sickness is generally prevalent between the sixth and twelfth weeks of pregnancy. The condition is completely normal and is not some abnormality or dysfunction that you need to worry about.

It can however be extremely annoying and discomforting. Unfortunately the exact causes of morning sickness are still not understood, but most believe it to be caused by a combination of factors related to the chemical changes your body experiences, including increased levels of estrogen and progesterone. Stress and fatigue are common during a pregnancy and may also have some influence over morning sickness.

As morning sickness is a natural feature of pregnancy there is little that can be done to prevent it. Natural remedies and methods can however be used to minimize the symptom and prevent the nausea or vomiting from becoming extremely problematic.

General precautions and things to keep in mind:
  • Avoid places that are warm and uncomfortable, as the heat can increase feelings of nausea.
  • Tiredness and fatigue do have a major role to play in the condition and it would make sense to take naps through the day. Avoid taking a nap right after eating however.
  • Make sure that you get adequate sleep at night and don’t get out of bed as soon as you awake in the morning. Sometimes lazing for a while before getting out and taking your time can actually help avert the unpleasant symptoms.
  • If possible try and keep some snacks like cereal or crackers ready to have before getting out of bed itself.
  • Whenever you’re cooking or are in the kitchen try and keep the room as airy as possible with the windows wide open so as to minimize the concentration of odors that can induce nausea.
  • Microwave cooking is preferable as it releases less odor.
  • Carry a handkerchief with some essential oil like lemon smeared into it. Breathe through the kerchief at any point when you feel nauseated with the smells around.

Diet:

  • Eat whatever you feel like as your cravings are natural and will not lead you away.
  • Try to snack on high protein foods like nuts, eggs and low fat meats, but avoid spicy and greasy foods as they are likely to cause heartburn and nausea.
  • Eat smaller and lighter meals as opposed to few large meals.
  • Before meals have something salty and avoid drinking fluids while eating.
